Two new H-E-B Stores Coming to Cypress

Two new H-E-B Stores will be opening in Cypress this fall. The two new locations will be larger than the standard locations. These new stores will have a show time kitchen, a cooking and grill department, a cheese shop with over 400 different kinds of cheese, tortilleria, over 2,000 varieties of wine, sushi bar, in store chef demonstrations and the Central Market Cafe on the Run.  A friend of mine said they loved the Central Market Cafe in Austin. It will be nice to have a store like Central Market so close in the area. Now anyone that wants to go to Whole Foods or Central Market does not have to drive 20 miles to down town . The Cypress and Vintage stores planned to be 11200 square feet.  They plan to hire 564 employees at Cypress Market and 550 employees at the Vintage Park location.  That's great news for the Cypress economy. They may close the 529 and Barker Cypress location once they open the Cypress Market location this has not been confirmed yet.

Cypress Market, located at 24224 Northwest Freeway is scheduled to open in late October and will be open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Vintage market, at US 249 and Louetta in Vintage Park, is scheduled to open in mid-November and will be open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Lady of America in Cypress Closes  in the Middle of the Night

I have several friends that are members of The Lady of America Gym  off of Barker Cypress and 290 They were upset when they showed up to  the gym on Tuesday July 16th to find out that the owners of the Gym shut down in the middle of the night without letting their members know .   They took all of the equipment and left an empty building behind.  Some of them had  Lady of America  memberships that  had been  prepaid . This Club was located 11806 Barker Cypress at 290.  When the President of  the corporate office was contacted he  blamed it on a "franchisee who didn't act properly and failed to notify customers the gym was closing."   This  is not the first time that this has happened with the Lady of American Gym.  The same thing happened back in 2005 when they moved the location to the Barker Cypress location.  The following information should help members get there money back.

Jersey Village Man Hospitalized with West Nile Virus

Roy Metcalf 82 a resident of Jersey Village is currently being hospitalized at the Tomball Regional Hospital after being infected by the West Nile Virus. Roy was the former assistant superintendent of Cy-Fair ISD and had Metcalf elementary school named after him. A few days after he and his wife hosted a National Night Out event in his subdivision he got very ill. He was rushed to an emergency room where they suspected it was the West Nile virus. He is now on a ventilator and  seems to be getting better .  Harris County Public Health Services Mosquito Control Division has been spraying for mosquitoes in this area heavily since this West Nile case.

Who is most at risk?

People over 50 years of age have the highest risk of developing a severe illness if infected with West Nile Virus. People with compromised or underdeveloped immune systems are also at increased risk. However, anyone can contract the virus.

What are the symptoms ?

If bitten by infected mosquitoes, most people do not develop any symptoms of infection. However if symptoms do occur, they usually appear 5-15 days after the time of the bite. Mild symptoms may include low grade fever, headache, and/or swollen lymph glands. In rare cases symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, muscle weakness, disorientation, brain inflammation (encephalitis), coma, and death. While there is no specific treatment for West Nile Virus, intensive supportive therapy is indicated for severe cases.

Time Warner Leaves Comcast Takes Over

Comcast is now Houston’s provider for cable, High-Speed Internet, home phone service, and various business services.  With this change everyone with  houston.rr.com email address will need to change there email address to comcast.net .  Be sure to update your my cypress directory profile with your new email address if you want  to continue getting emails from other members.   According to Comcast the pricing is less than Time Warner for example Digital Basic was $45.99 a month, is now $44.99 a month  and DVR with Digital Starter was $9.99 a month, is now $9.95 a month.  It's not a big savings but at least it is not more money.

Texas Bluebonnets

As our state flower, bluebonnets have a most interesting history. Bluebonnets have been loved since man first trod the vast prairies of Texas. Indians wove fascinating folk tales around them. The early-day Spanish priests gathered the seeds and grew them around their missions. This practice gave rise to the myth that the padres had brought the plant from Spain, but this cannot be true since the two predominant species of bluebonnets are found growing naturally only in Texas and at no other location in the world.

Texas actually has five state flowers, more or less, and they are all bluebonnets.   While the weather is nice and they are still in bloom be sure to take a drive on 290 towards Chapel  Hill and Brenham.  Make sure to take your camera you can stop on the side of the road and take some pictures.  They should stay in bloom for a few more weeks.

The five state flowers of Texas are:
  1. Lupinus subcarnosus, the original champion and still co-holder of the title, grows naturally in deep sandy loams from Leon County southwest to LaSalle County and down to the northern part of Hidalgo County in the Valley. It is often referred to as the sandy land bluebonnet. The plant's leaflets are blunt, sometimes notched with silky undersides. This species, which reaches peak bloom in late March, is not easy to maintain in clay soils.
  2. Lupinus texensis, the favorite of tourists and artists, provides the blue spring carpet of Central Texas. It is widely known as THE Texas bluebonnet. It has pointed leaflets, the flowering stalk is tipped with white (like a bunny's tail) and hits its peak bloom in late March and early April. It is the easiest of all the species to grow.
  3. Lupinus Havardii, also known as the Big Bend or Chisos Bluebonnet, is the most majestic of the Texas bluebonnet tribe with flowering spikes up to three feet. It is found on the flats of the Big Bend country in early spring, usually has seven leaflets and is difficult to cultivate outside its natural habitat.
  4. Lupinus concinnus is an inconspicuous little lupine, from 2 to 7 inches, with flowers which combine elements of white, rosy purple and lavender. Commonly known as the annual lupine, it is found sparingly in the Trans-Pecos region, blooming in early spring.
  5. Lupinus plattensis sneaks down from the north into the Texas Panhandle's sandy dunes. It is the only perennial species in the state and grows to about two feet tall. It normally blooms in mid to late spring and is also known as the dune bluebonnet, the plains bluebonnet and the Nebraska Lupine.

Lowery Teacher Receives Recognition At Houston Rockets Game

Alana Wilkin, a fourth-grade teacher at Lowery Elementary School, was one of 10 Houston-area teachers who received recognition at a recent Houston Rockets game for winning the "teacher of the game" award sponsored by the Houston Rockets and Devon Energy. Wilkin, who was nominated by Lowery librarian Donna Blank, was selected for the honor for going above and beyond the call of duty as well as inspiring students to succeed in life and school. In addition to receiving a plaque on the court, Wilkin received two free Rockets tickets, a free parking pass, a game T-shirt, and a copy of the nomination form submitted on her behalf. The purpose of the Teacher of the Game award by the Houston Rockets and Devon Energy is to applaud the exceptional teachers in the Houston area by acknowledging that America’s future depends on teachers educating our children and that these teachers are at the foundation of educational excellence.

New Hospitals in the Cypress Area

North Cypress Medical Center:

On January 12,2007 the North Cypress Medical Center opened it doors. It was established by a group of Houston physicians who wanted to create an upscale, patient-friendly hospital.  The unique approach and design of this facility is to make patients feel they are in a luxury hotel, not a hospital.  As of now they do not have a Labor and delivary department.  They do have y 64 beds with near term goal of 88 beds, this facility contains the latest diagnostic and testing modalities, PET scanner, ultra-high resolution rapid CT scanner, Medical and Radiation Cancer centers, outpatient surgery center, comprehensive Breast center, emergency rooms and administrative offices.

Annually, property taxes should generate $4 million to the community, Cy-Fair College and the Cy-Fair Independent School District.

It is troubling that in our society we find many less fortunate that may have fallen on hard times and become homeless.   We may want to help in some way but due to a variety of circumstances we are unable to lend a hand.   We would like to acknowledge a Shining Star in our community, Tina Thomas.   She has committed to make a difference and over the past three years, Tina and her husband have done just that.   Once a week they provide meals for as many as seventy people.   This couple work together scanning the grocery stores for good sales to prepare meals for people who might otherwise go without.   Imagine the impact she has made in our community!  Over the last three years this couple has served nearly 11,000 meals to the homeless.   You might say, what can I do?  Tina states that they can use bottled water, containers and utensils to help in this service to the community.    Thank you Tina, for shining our Cypress Community!

Do you know someone in our community who has helped others or reached a special milestone? My Cypress Directory wants to recognize those people and their accomplishments. Send us an  e-mail  telling us who you would like to nominate and why. Submit
