This month, we are excited to introduce the Cypress Super Moms as April’s Shining Stars.   They are a group of about twenty moms who are trying to make a difference in our area.   They have adopted a low income family out of Rosharon with two children.  The group meets twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday.   Their latest project is a yard sale on April 14th at the recreation building, Cypress Point Subdivision.   All the proceeds will go to their adoptive family.   They need donations for the sale and your support!! Let’s make sure that we participate in this effort to make a difference in the lives of a family who will be blessed by what we are able to contribute.  Miss Texas 2004, Stephanie Guerrero will be there to meet and greet as well.   She is also a Cypress Super Mom!!

Lowery Teacher Receives Recognition At Houston Rockets Game

Alana Wilkin, a fourth-grade teacher at Lowery Elementary School, was one of 10 Houston-area teachers who received recognition at a recent Houston Rockets game for winning the "teacher of the game" award sponsored by the Houston Rockets and Devon Energy. Wilkin, who was nominated by Lowery librarian Donna Blank, was selected for the honor for going above and beyond the call of duty as well as inspiring students to succeed in life and school. In addition to receiving a plaque on the court, Wilkin received two free Rockets tickets, a free parking pass, a game T-shirt, and a copy of the nomination form submitted on her behalf. The purpose of the Teacher of the Game award by the Houston Rockets and Devon Energy is to applaud the exceptional teachers in the Houston area by acknowledging that America’s future depends on teachers educating our children and that these teachers are at the foundation of educational excellence.

JOSH'S DREAMS

In January this year Josh Hornick-Lancaster age 11 of Cypress Texas was nominated and accepted into the Youth Friendship Games in Holland.   His mom Lori worked  diligently to raise money for her son to participate  in these games.  We are sad to learn  that Josh's doctor will not to allow him to play.  Over the past year Josh has been battling several medical conditions.  In the past month he was in the hospital twice and he is now being sent to a specialist in Dallas because they are unsure of what is wrong with him.  Josh, being the amazing kid he is, has put aside his own dreams and has started a charity called Josh's Dreams.  He wants to donate the money he raised and continue to raise more money for kids in Cypress that can not afford to participate in after school sports.  The money will be used to pay for the cost of registration for the sport.  He also wants people to donate sports equipment they are no longer using to give them to a kids who need them.  Keeping kids involved in sports keeps them out of trouble after school.  You can post on the Josh's Dreams Forum on My Cypress Directory if you have sports equipment to donate.  My Cypress Directory thinks that what Josh is doing is wonderful and we want to support him 100 percent.    Josh will continue with the scheduled fundraising events; the car wash and the BBQ dinner and auction at AJ's .  I encourage everyone to come out and show your support.

They are currently looking for donations for a Garage Sale on March 31, 2007

JOSH WILL CELEBRATE HIS 12th BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 17TH, SO COME OUT TO THE CAR WASH AND WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY........HE WOULD LOVE TO SEE EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!

The Car Wash will be held at half time grille on clay road between barker cypress and hwy 6  is from 9 - 2 am.

Cool Facts About Cypress

The area around which Cypress sits now was populated by Atakapan Indian tribes, but they soon disappeared after the appearance of German settlers in the 1840s; their heritage is most notably reflected in the names of some of the major thoroughfares of the area, such as Huffmeister and Telge Roads. General Sam Houston and his Texas Army visited the area on March 22, 1836 on the way to Harrisburg, which is now known as Houston, just days before the Battle of San Jacinto. The area was mostly rural until the 1980s, when developers began to develop the area as an alternative suburb to Katy.

Welcome Home Francisco Ramos

We were very excited to get the following news from Francisco's family.

An Update from mom, Eileen Ramos:
Late last Wednesday the doctors told us that Francisco could be discharged Friday or Monday depending on results of some blood tests.  His levels were good so late Saturday afternoon Francisco came home.  It was sort of surreal last night to have all of us together in the house and to watch the boys play together in the playroom for hours.  Both Francisco and Mateo were very happy.  Yesterday I asked my sister what the date was and she told me February 10th.  And I said, “let 2007 begin”.  For the rest of the world it began January 1st, but for us we feel like we are just starting this new year.

METRO PARK &  RIDE SERVICE  290 AND SKINNER

METRO, HP SET TO ELIMINATE 600+ CARS FROM U.S.-290 CORRIDOR

Thanks to a partnership with Hewlett Packard (HP), METRO is set to put a dent in the amount of vehicles traveling in the U.S.-290 corridor. A lease agreement will allow METRO's customers to park in about 620 spaces at HP's property. The lease enables METRO to operate the Park & Ride service from HP's office, located on the northbound 290 service road, just east of Skinner Road.

The agreement provides a temporary location for the 217 Cypress Park & Ride Service while the permanent facility is built nearby. The agreement shows HP'S commitment to corporate citizenship, as it provides much needed relief to the congested U.S.-290 corridor.

Travelers on the U.S.-290 corridor will be able to use the 217 Cypress Park & Ride service as early as Monday, January 22, 2007. In addition to downtown stops, there will be a stop at the Northwest Transit Center, providing connectivity to the Galleria area, Greenway Plaza and the Texas Medical Center. Inbound downtown stops are: Smith at Preston, Smith at Rusk, Smith at Dallas and Smith at Jefferson. Outbound stops are: Louisiana at Pease, Louisiana at Lamar, Louisiana at Capitol, & Louisiana at Congress.

The 217 Cypress Park & Ride will operate Monday through Friday from 5:45 - 7:45 am (inbound) and 3:15 - 6:30 pm (outbound). Rush hour service will have a peak frequency of 15 minutes. There will be no midday service.

Local Farms offer pick your own Fruits and Vegetables

I have been to the Chmielewski Blueberry farm and Matt Family Orchard.  I took my kids with me and we had a great time at both places.

The Chmielewski Blueberry farm had lots of ripe blueberries for $2.50 per pound.    You don't need to bring buckets or bags with you, as they provide everything you'll need.

Available now at the Matt Family Orchard, were blackberries at $3.00 per pound. Homegrown tomatoes were also for sale.  One tip on the blackberries, the sweetest ones are the ones that are round and plump.  Figs will be the next fruit to come into season at the orchard.  The Orchard has
year-round group tours, an abundance of wild life, hayrides, picnic tables, campfire (they provide wood), stack of hay for "King of the Hill" game and more.  Some activities are by reservation only, so call first.

I have provided a list of Cypress area pick your on fruit and veggie places if you have some that I have missed that you would like to see added be sure to send me an email.  I have a larger list on the forum Click here to see the entire list.

From 290 and Spring Cypress, it  only takes 10 or 15 minutes to get to both farms.

When picking be sure to wear closed toed shoes, bring sun screen and go early to beat the heat.

Protect You and Your Family From Sun Damage

Sunscreen Mistakes

Applying sunscreen after going outdoors.
Sunscreen needs to be applied 15-30 minutes prior to going outdoors to allow the sunscreen to be absorbed into the skin. Follow manufacturer's instructions for exactly how long before going into the sun.

Not applying enough sunscreen.
The estimate is about 1 oz. for an adult. Keep in mind that that all parts of the body that will be exposed to the sun needs to be protected. Neglected areas include face, ears, neck, and feet

Not reapplying after swimming.

Water-proof or water-repellant?

If you like to go for a swim to cool down and at the same time protect yourself against sun damage to the skin, you need to make sure that the sunblock cream is either water-repellant or water-proof.

A water-proof sunblock cream withstands 4 x 20 minutes of swimming without being washed off. If the sunblock cream is water-repellant, you can swim for 2 x 20 minutes without it being washed off. However, this is only applicable if you let yourself air-dry and do not dry yourself with a towel.

It is therefore always a good idea to rub on a good layer of cream after going for a dip.

What factor and what filter should I choose?

The factor number indicates the strength of the sun filter the sunblock cream contains. The higher the factor number a sunblock cream has, the more protection it gives. What factor we should choose depends on our skin type.

The vast majority of us can manage with a factor 15 and it does not make much of a difference if we go for higher factor numbers.

However, exceptions are children and adults who tend to suffer from eczema. In these cases, a factor 25 or even higher is often the recommended level of protection.

It is often a good idea to use a stick applicator with a higher factor number for particularly exposed areas of the body such as the shoulders, nose, lips and ear lobes.
