Cypress  Shining Star
 


Tracy Martin is a shining star in our wonderful community.  She is  knitting hats for the local Cancer centers (North Cypress and Cy-fair) patients for this Fall and Winter.  She has made one for my dad who is currently going though radiation and chemo. When I asked her why she does it she said "  Well, I lost my Mom to ovarian cancer 3 1/2 years ago and just feel really compelled to let other patients know someone out there cares about them. This is a really hard time in their lives as well as their families and knowing someone out there cares about them can make a world of difference!"  She is currently looking for anyone who knits or crochets to help and be involved in this project.  Mrs. Martin Explained "The hats don't have to be fancy, but warm and easily washed and dried."    If you don't knit or crochet, donations of yarn or gift cards to ebay or Hobby Lobby would be greatly appreciated as  most of  her expense comes from yarn .  I would just like to solute Tracy Martin for doing such a wonderful thing.  I hope her project grows and touches the lives of many people.  To Contact her   Tracy  Martin  email her at

Spring Break on a Budget

The park is always a fun and free we have some nice parks in the area. One of my kids favorite parks is on Ulrich, between Zion and Hufsmith Roads in Tomball. The play sturctures and not typical of the parks around here they are mostly made out of wood and tires. They have picnic tables and swings a smaller childrens area and bigger childrens play area. Best of all they have restrooms onsite. We have had to leave parks in the past because there are no restrooms.

Some other nice parks in our area are

Meyer Park - it is on Cypresswood next close to the courthouse the exact address is 7700 Cypresswood Drive Spring, Texas 77379 The park is a 286-acre facility with 16 unlighted soccer fields, ten lighted soccer fields, two unlighted softball fields, a basketball court, barbecue pavilion, gazebo, paved trails, nature trails, duck pond, a three-acre fishing lake, picnic tables, barbecue grills, two age-specific playgrounds, and rest room facilities. They have a lake where you can feed the ducks.

Bear Creek Park - This one is very nice because they have a bunch of different animals such as deer, buffalo, goats, pigs, ostrich, peacocks, ducks, owls and more. They have nice play structures, baseball, softball fields, restrooms, and walking trails. It is off of hwy 6 and clay road or you can take Eldrige to Clay. 3535 War Memorial Drive Houston, Texas 77084

Telge Park - It is just off of Telge road it is a small park but it is nice they have picnic tables and a nature trail that takes you to Cypress Creek they have a few play structures. It is close by the exact address is 12400 Pleasant Grove Road Cypress, Texas 77429

The Library is another free and great place for the kids.

Cy-Fair Library is has a very nice childrens area with computers that are just the right size for kids loaded with fun early literacy games. They also have a coloring table, puzzels, and of coures a huge selection of books. They also have story time and family game nights. It is located at the Cy-Fair college off of Barker Cypress.

Northwest Library - This library is a little smaller but has lots of fun activities and story time going on all the time. It is located next the the meet right off of Jones Road on Regency Green. Cypresswood Library - It is located off of Cypresswood right next door from the court house. You could make a day out of it going to Myer park before or after the library since Myer park is right down the street. Tomball Library - This library is located at the college off of 249 close to Zion Road . They have a very nice childrens library at this location. You could also go to the Tomball park since it is very close by. They have lots of events for the kids heres the link.

  This Weekend in Cypress
 

This weekend  Bridgeland celebrated the opening of their Cypress Creek nature trails by holding its first annual Nature fest.  These wood trails will take you through a treasure of natural resources, introduce you to local wildlife and vegetation and give you a glimpse of what life here was like hundreds of years ago.  The trails are  rustic and are  1.3 miles long.  At the Nature Fest they had performances from the Houston Zoo, Houston, Canine Frisbee Disc Club, and Birds of Prey.  They had lots of activities for the kids such as pony rides, petting zoo, and a exhibit  where the kids could hold armadillos.  All of the activities and shows were free for everyone to enjoy. Neighbors helping neighbors all over Cypress.  This is one thing that makes our community so great.  I know some people in our community are still without power and I hope everyone gets power soon.  There are a lot of people in our area with roof damage. When you drive around our area, you see a lot of blue tarps on roofs.  If you do have roof damage and still need a blue tarp you can call  the Roof tarps Corps of Engineers . They can come to your home and cover your roof with a tarp. Call 1-888-ROOF-BLU.  CFISD is set to have the teachers and staff returning on Monday September 22 and have the students will be returning on Tuesday September 23rd.  This may change to be sure to check CFISD website for more information.

A lot of people have high insurance deductibles to fix things like fences and roofs you may want to sign up with FEMA to see if they will be able to help with the high deductibles.  Call FEMA for assistance if you had damage to your property due to Hurricane Ike. That number is 1-800-621-3362

Cypress History

 The area around which Cypress sits now was populated by Atakapan Indian tribes, but they soon disappeared after the appearance of German settlers in the 1840s; their heritage is most notably reflected in the names of some of the major thoroughfares of the area, such as Huffmeister and Telge Roads. General Sam Houston and his Texas Army visited the area on March 22, 1836 on the way to Harrisburg, which is now known as Houston, just days before the Battle of San Jacinto. The area was mostly rural until the 1980s, when developers began to develop the area as an alternative suburb to Katy.

Geography
 

Cypress is located at 29°59′40″N, 95°40′3″W (29.9947, -95.6676), near the intersection of US Highway 290 and Spring-Cypress Road. Cypress is located within the Cypress Creek and Little Cypress Creek watershed.

Cypress has two distinct geographic profiles separated by Highway 290. The area north of US 290 is forested and thickly wooded, while the area south of 290 is predominately ranchland and grassy prairie.

Cypress falls under the jurisdiction of Harris County Precincts 3 and 4 (separated by Cypress Creek).

Major arteries include Highway 290 to the South and Texas State Highway 249 to the North. Both have planned expansion projects which may include new tollways and commuter rail. However, the planned timetable has not kept up with the immense growth of the area over the past 10 years.

Demographics

As of the 2000 US Census, there were approximately 46,025 people, 15,207 households, and 12,914 families living in the zip codes labeled as Cypress. There were 15,207 housing units at an average density of 190.9/km˛ (494.6/mi˛). Most households are single-family residences with an average of 3 members per family.

The 77429 Zip Code is one of the most affluent zip codes in Harris County; nearly 77% of the population has an income over US $50,000 and 42.65% earning over $100,000.  The Cypress urban cluster ranks 50th in the top 100 highest-income urban areas in the United States.

Cypress is home to a number of master-planned communities such as Longwood, Coles Crossing, Rock Creek, Lakewood Forest/Lakewood Forest Estates, Lakewood Oaks Estates, Blackhorse Ranch, Bridgeland, Cypress Creek Lakes, Fairfield, Northlake Forest, and numerous other single home family residential developments.

Education

 

Cypress is served by Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, the third largest school district in the State of Texas and one of the fastest growing in the United States. The area served by CFISD has an estimated population of nearly 700,000 as of 2005.

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high school students attend Cy-Fair High School, Cypress Creek High School, Cypress Falls High School, Cypress Woods High School, Cypress Springs High School, Langham Creek High School, or Cypress Ridge High School.

Two more High Schools are currently being constructed, to open in 2008. They are Cypress Ranch High School and Cypress Lakes High School.

The area of Cypress is served by two volunteer fire departments, Cy-Fair VFD and Cypress Creek VFD. Cy-Fair VFD is one of the largest volunteer fire departments in the United States with 11 stations.

 

 

Houston Premium Outlet Now Open

 

This was the line outside of the Coach factory Outlet store.  I was there from 9:00am to 3:30pm and the line only got longer though out the day.  Nike which is located right next door was very busy with lots of great sales. 

 

Tips for before you go:

Make sure that you go online to the website www.premiumoutlets.com and sign up for the VIP membership which is free. You can then print out a list of coupons and a coupon for a VIP coupon book when you get there. You will want to go the the information booth when you get to the mall to sign up for all the give a ways and to claim your coupon book. The information desk is inside the food court.

The lay out of the mall is nice because it goes in one big loop and cuts across in the middle. You still may want to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Beware when you go to the crocs store they don't have prices on anything you have to ask.  The prices are good though most of the crocs are $19 some are less some are more.

Jack Jones Benefit Fund

 Jack Jones is 5 years old and was diagnosed in March of 2007 with Wilms Tumor Stage 2. It is a childhood cancer that affects the kidneys. His left kidney had a 5 pound tumor which was removed March 5th. He did 18 weeks of chemotherapy, which ended July 17th. In August 2007 he relapsed after being off treatment for 3 weeks. THE BEAST WAS BACK!!! The doctors found several nodules in his lungs. We were very shocked seeing that with the original diagnosis, there was only a 5% chance of relapse. He is now in the last week of his 24 weeklong chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Presently any sign of disease is negative and we are praying that the beast stays away…this time for good!!!

In honor of Jacks strength and journey, we are having a benefit for him. We will be raising money to help with medical expenses and celebrating his end of treatment. As you can imagine, the family has incurred an absurd amount of medical bills and we are trying to help provide a relief for that. It’s hard to believe that all this has happened in less than a year!!! Please support this precious family in whatever way that you can. His mother has been a rock in this roller coaster ride. She is a single hard-working mother of two who, with the support of family and friends, has maintained a fulltime job even when it is from Jack’s side in the hospital. I think it’s time that the community rally around her to give her a little relief. 

Most importantly, please keep Jack and all the innocent children who are battling cancer in your prayers. I truly believe that without the support and prayer that Jack has received so far, he would not be where he is now. The power of prayer is amazing!!!

Spot Light on a Local Author

 

Ruth was born in Pinebluff, Arkansas, the youngest of seven.  Her father was a minister and their family moved throughout the south as he took the pastorate and started new churches. Ruth's father was sixty-four years old when she was born so she was the apple of his eye and always encouraged that anything  she wanted to do was possible.   

Ruth marched for civil rights, freedom from hunger and has always had a strong sense that
everyone should receive an equal opportunity to pursue their dreams.   She attended
college at seventeen, graduated and married young, beginning her love of reading, writing
and art at an early age.   Ruth has been a writer and storyteller all of her life.  Before she
began writing, she would sit with her friends or lie on the beach and create stories to
entertain them.

Her son, Gary, was born in Michigan and has been one of the proudest moments of her life
second only to the birth of her grandsons, Cameron and Chance.

Her most recently published book is chessmen  which can be purchased at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com.
